Pre-Transport Stock Preparation - Costing Everyone!

In 2007 a joint ALTA and Meat and Livestock Australia survey of over 200 professional livestock transport companies revealed poor stock preparation for transport as the number one animal welfare issue facing Australian livestock transport.  A follow-up ALTA industry survey and report on this matter has now been released.  The ALTA estimates that the costs and water use of washing out dirty livestock crates runs to $50 million and 6 billion litres of water a year!  Even some simple steps towards better pre transport stock preparation of your livestock will help to reduce these hidden costs to our shared industry.  Better stock preparation will also result in cleaner rural roads free of effluent spill, cleaner animals arriving for processing and export and healthier, less stressed animals during the transport journey.

ALTA Submission to Infrastructure Australia - A fresh approach to rural infrastructure investment - more profits, safer roads and a greener industry.

Over the past 3 years the ALTA has completed significant research and produced several case studies on behalf of its members; it has all been done to show Government that the key to effective investment in rural freight infrastructure is involving industry in spotting opportunities for reform and then putting ‘bottom line’ returns to these project on the table for all to see.  This is done so that each project – big or small - can compete for funding and support on its merits.  It’s important to realise that this doesn’t happen now! In Australia today, road investment decisions are largely the preserve of bureaucrats who have no idea of the profit potential of rural road reforms.  Worse still, these bureaucrats don’t talk to their friends the road traffic regulators, so road freight regulations are never reformed to match sensible road investments!  At a time when Australia is trying to squeeze the most productivity out of its rural freight networks, this is a crazy way to do business!

The ALTA’s formal submission to Infrastructure Australiaoffers a smarter way forward, using case studies to prove the point that smart investments and regulatory reforms that clear out the red tape can deliver great results.  Our case studies link lot of small infrastructure reforms into bigger regional networks of reforms that will benefit whole regional communities.  And we provide the ‘bottom line’ figures in profits, safety and emissions to prove their worth! The ALTA wants Government to take this approach to all rural and regional freight infrastructure and regulatory reforms, in the interests of making country Australia more profitable, safer and greener…

Trucking's New Driver Fatigue Laws - Preventing Fatigue is Everybody's Responsibility!

Some of the biggest delays and fatigue causing incidents are out of the driver’s control – they’re caused by the customer – and they may not even know it!

The new heavy vehicle driver fatigue laws place serious legal obligations on those who use and schedule trucks to ensure that driver fatigue doesn’t become a road safety issue.  To help our customers through the change and make sure that they aren’t exposed to legal headaches, we will be presenting fact sheets for all of our customer groups.

First up is the stock and station agent sector.  Read the official advice from the Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association to its own members about managing the driver fatigue problem and staying clear of the legal risks.  The ALTA  endorses this advice.

Don’t be concerned, be informed.  Read our customer guides, make the culture change and improve road safety with the ALTA!
